Colours of Korean Folk Art
In this refreshing autumn breeze, the Minhwa Art Association of Canada has organized the 4th annual exhibition in November 2023. This year's exhibition is particularly meaningful as it commemorates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Canada.
The Minhwa Canada Exhibition: Colours of Korean Folk Art was held in collaboration with Korean school students, providing a valuable opportunity for our youth to learn the hidden meanings within Korean folk paintings while getting closer to the art of minhwa.
We express our gratitude to the officials from the Korean Consulate General of Toronto, representatives from the Overseas Korean Community, students from the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Korean School, and the many members who participated in and supported this exhibition.
신선한 가을바람이 불어 좋은 이 가을에 제4회 캐나다 민화협회 정기전을 마련하였습니다.
올해는 한국과 캐나다 수교 60주년을 기념하는 해로 더욱 뜻깊은 전시이기도 합니다.
한글 학교 학생들과 함께하는 이번 전시가, 우리 청소년들에게는 민화를 그리면서 그림 속에 들어 있는 숨은 의미를 배우고 민화에 조금 더 가깝게 다가갈 기회였으며, 저희 회원들에게는 소중한 문화유산인 민화를 청소년들에게 계승시키고 타 문화에게 널리 알릴 수 있는 뜻깊은 자리가 되리라고 믿습니다.
저희 캐나다 민화협회는 꾸준히 여러 민족과 다양한 연령대에게, 직접 민화를 그리며 한국의 문화를 느낄 기회를 제공할것입니다.
또한, 민화가 다양한 문화 속에서 더욱 친근한 한국 예술로 자리 잡을 수 있도록 연구하며, 협회 전시를 통하여 발표해 나갈 것입니다.

Online Minhwa Art Course for Seniors
The Minhwa Art Association of Canada is proud to present “Minhwa: Time to Shine” with the support of Service Canada.
Minhwa in Canada
Minhwa has been playing a positive role with bright emotions in difficult times since ancient times. It is a story of life, a story of happiness, and a story of dreams. Minhwa, also known as Korean Folk Art, is art that contains our sincere stories.
During this time when all social activities and gatherings were not allowed due to COVID-19, the Minhwa Art Association of Canada postponed the 2020 inaugural in-person Minhwa course for seniors. We waited for things to “get back to normal” but after one full year later, in-person gatherings were still not permitted.
Minhwa Canada rose up to this challenge and changed the entire programming to be fully online. We faced several barriers and some seniors were not digitally savvy. However, with careful planning, training, and practicing, the digital barrier was no longer a hinderance but instead turned into a new skill and tool for seniors.
Through minhwa, this course gave participants an opportunity to express stories through this art medium but also gave seniors a new experience through this digital learning environment era. At Minhwa Canada we strive to pass down the techniques and history of minhwa in hopes to continue to spread the joy of art.
Online Minhwa Art Course for Seniors
민화는 예로부터 어려운 시기에 밝은 정서로 긍정적인 역할을 해 오고 있고 삶의 이야기이며, 복의 이야기요, 꿈의 이야기라고 합니다. 또한 민화는 우리의 진솔한 이야기가 담겨있는 우리만의 예술입니다.
코로나-19로 인하여 모든 야외활동과 모든 문화생활이 허락되지 않는 이 시기에 캐나다 연방정부 후원하에 캐나다 민화협회에서 시니어를 위한 “시니어 민화 교실” 화상 수업을 개최하였습니다.
자신은 컴맹이라고만 외치시던 분들이 컴퓨터 앞에 앉으셔서 줌이라는 화상을 통해 그림 수업을 받으셨고 이 메일을 통해 서로 소통하며 자신들이 그린 그림을 제게 사진으로 보내주셨습니다.
하루하루가 빠르게 변화하는 일명 IT 시대에 우리에게는 해당하지 않는 일이라고 뒷전에 계시던 분들이 컴퓨터 앞에 앉으셔서 민화에 들어 있는 길상적인 의미를 되세기며 기도하는 마음으로 꽃잎 하나하나에 색을 입히셨고 K-민화을 자손들과 다문화 사회인 캐나다에, 넓게는 세계에 알리는 데 큰 공헌을 하셨습니다. 이 시간을 통해 민화를 그리며 예술 활동을 하셨을 뿐 아니라 과학기술 시대에 몸소 체험을하셨습니다.
너무나 감동적이고 훌륭한 시니어의 파워였습니다. 건강히 오래오래 사시길바랍니다.
